Article: 9 Variations On A Dance Theme

Hilary Harris is a filmmaker who deserves to be better known – a pioneer of time-lapse photography and, if we are to judge him by 1967 film 9 Variations on a Dance Theme, a fascinating creator of experimental cinema and performance art.

In this 13 minute film, dancer Bettie de Jong performs the same piece nine times, while Harris’s camera develops more and more movement and the editing becomes increasingly frenetic, allowing us to see the same piece in many different ways, as the avant-garde score also becomes more hectic. It’s rather remarkable, and very beautiful.
